CONFERENCE THEME
Reimagining Education for a Sustainable Future
The conference draws inspiration from the balangay, an ancient Filipino seafaring boat that symbolizes collective navigation, shared purpose, adaptability, and community resilience. The balangay also embodies the Filipino spirit of resilience, formed by the lived realities of the Philippines as an archipelagic country where communities have long learned to endure, adapt, and remain connected across geographic and environmental adversities.
Just as early communities journeyed together across uncertain waters, today's global education ecosystem must collaboratively navigate the complex challenges of sustainability, equity, and rapid technological transformation. Aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the conference emphasizes collective intelligence, indigenous knowledge, and technological innovation as co-equal forces shaping the future of education.
The conference explores these imperatives through five interconnected sub-themes:
Flexible and Inclusive Learning
Focuses on equitable, learner-centered, and inclusive education experiences. With a flexible hull that adapts to withstand waves and makes space for all aboard, a balangay reflects a safe learning space grounded in inclusion, shared responsibility, and community effort toward a common destination.
Transformative Technologies
Focuses on the ethical and effective use of emerging technologies in education to strengthen teaching, learning, and adaptability in evolving global systems, just like in a balangay journey where those aboard share tools and resources that support collective navigation.
Credentials, Skills, and the Future of Work
Focuses on evolving models of learning recognition and workforce alignment reflecting how each member of the balangay acquires and contributes skills essential for the sustainability of the journey.
Governance, Policy, and Sustainability
Focuses on policy, leadership, and quality assurance in Open, Distance and elearning (ODeL) systems keeping with the stewardship and shared responsibility needed to steer the balangay safely and ethically across changing conditions.
Communities, Partnerships, and Global Solidarity
Focuses on collaboration, indigenous knowledge, and community engagement, where shared knowledge and cultural grounding help connect communities toward common goals, much like a balangay journeying across coasts and generations. Inspired by the balangay’s interlocking wooden planks fitted together without nails, it also highlights interdependence, shared roles, and the strength of communities working together in harmony.
